I dream of food all the time.
Whether I’m dreaming up recipes at my kitchen table or in the land of Nod, food ideas help me explore ideas around what’s healthy to eat, what’s fun to cook, what stimulates food desires and what joyful meals you want to share.
Food in dreams can also symbolize what nourishes and supports you psychologically and spiritually.
Many experts says that eating in dreams may specifically relate to what ideas and beliefs we are taking into our own psyche from outside – what we swallow integrates into who we are. The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ is especially true in dreams, where everything, even objects, can reflect a part of ourselves.
It’s not common to recall taste in a dream, however if you do, consider if the food was bitter or sweet. Did it leave a bad taste in your mouth or was it totally delicious? This can represent recent events, especially with other people. For example, it an experience with a person left you feeling bitter, you could have a dream about bitter foods.
The fascinating part of all this to me, however, is exactly what dreams about food mean and research around the globe is fairly specific.

Dreams about eating food are said to be symbols of love for another and indicates our true nurturing and caring nature. At the same time, the dream relates to some form of enjoyment and satisfaction – we are fulfilling and indulging in all the good things in life at the present time.
Dreams about cooking food are also a reflection of the fulfillment of our desires, albeit at another time and usually unexpectedly and in an unusual way. It’s also said to indicate someone inviting you to a gathering soon.
Dreams about eating birthday cake. Mmm… can I have a dream cake and eat it too? Somewhat obviously, birthday cakes often appear in dreams when it’s time to celebrate success or a happy occasion but is also said to be a positive sign to symbolise the love and support of those closest to you.
Dreams about eating fruit are symbolic of a goal achievement, the end of a growth process. A round fruit in dreams may represent what Jung calls ‘the Self in all its nourishing naturalness, an image of our wholeness’. It’s also described as a symbol for your raw emotions and signals a need to restore yourself in some basic way. Perhaps that’s achieved by eating more cake???
Dreams about eating sweets such as chocolate, ice cream or cookies represent life’s treats. You may subconsciously feel you lack excitement in your life, and you crave comforting or meaningful experiences.
Dreams about eating junk food. We all know (and are constantly reminded!) that processed and fast foods are known to be detrimental to your health and addictive. Dreaming of these ‘temptations’ indicate that you are unfulfilled by life and feeling very anxious. You may be searching for quick, easy fix to your problems, but eating ‘junk’ food won’t be likely to resolve them.

Dreams about eating fish. According to a medium known as Aunty Flo who has a degree with a focus on dream psychology, eating fish is a sign of good fortune and you will hear good news soon. You’ll also find growth and positive development in your job and finances. Unfortunately, there are no instructions on how to encourage dreams about fish to make it happen!
Dreaming of too much food can symbolise a sense of having ‘too much on your plate’ and sharing food in a dream can be a very rewarding feeling, creating a sense there is something of value you are able to offer to others.
Dreams about food and eating are referenced in the earliest historical writing on drams. Freud believed that children have the simplest dreams as they have less complicated psychic lives. He presented his own children’s simple dreams as evidence for wish fulfillment. In one, his eight-year-old daughter dreamed of colourfully wrapped chocolate bars. Her mother had denied her similar chocolates earlier that day.

Predating the work of Freud, dream interpreter Gustavus Hindman Miller’s ‘10,000 Dreams Interpreted’ research includes sections on food and drink. He gives highly detailed interpretations of what specific food dreams mean. For example, ‘To dream of seeing a bed of radishes growing, is an omen of good luck. Such a dream foretells that your friends will be unusually kind, and your business will prosper”.
The other side of all these joyous dreams is, of course, the nightmare. Something I certainly don’t want to research. So, I’ve invited my psychologist cousin, Eugenia (know affectionally by the family as ‘Psycho Gen’!) to provide an insight into that thing we’ve all experienced… the night terrors! You’ll find her article HERE .
